Rotate PDF pages

A scanned contract with two pages on their side, a landscape table stuck in a portrait report, a whole file that opens upside down. Drop the PDF here, pick the pages, and save it the right way up — without the document ever leaving your device.

How to use it

  1. Drop a PDF onto the box below. A preview of every page appears under it.
  2. Choose the turn — 90° right, 180° or 90° left — then leave it on all pages, or click the pages that need it. The previews turn as you choose.
  3. Press Process files and download the rotated PDF.

Turning some pages, not all of them

Most documents that need rotating only need it in places: the two landscape pages in the middle of a scan, or the odd page someone fed into the scanner the wrong way round. Click those pages in the preview and only they are turned; the rest are saved exactly as they were. The page field above the previews keeps the same list in writing, so on a long document you can type 12-14, 31 instead of hunting for them, and clicking a page updates the field.

How rotation is stored in a PDF

A PDF page carries a rotation setting that tells every reader which way up to show it. This tool changes that setting and nothing else. The text, the images and the fonts on the page are not touched or redrawn, so text stays selectable and searchable, a scan keeps its full resolution, and the file stays about the same size. The turn is added to whatever the page already had: a page stored at 90 degrees and turned another 90 comes out at 180, not reset to 90, so the preview you see is the page you get.

What else the file keeps

The document is saved as a whole rather than rebuilt page by page, which means bookmarks, links between pages, filled-in form fields and attachments all come across intact. Merging or splitting has to rebuild the file and loses some of those; rotating does not need to. The one thing it cannot open is a PDF protected with a password, which has to be unlocked first.

Questions

Is the PDF uploaded to rotate it?

No. The file is opened by JavaScript in this page, the previews are drawn on your device, and the rotated copy is written there too. You can switch off your connection once the page has loaded and it keeps working.

Will rotating make the text blurry or unselectable?

No. Only the page rotation setting changes. The content is not converted to an image, so text you could select and search before can still be selected and searched afterwards.

Can I turn different pages by different amounts?

In one pass every chosen page gets the same turn. For a mix, turn the first group, then drop the downloaded file back in and turn the second group; each pass adds to the rotation the pages already have.

Does the rotation stick when I open the file elsewhere?

Yes. The rotation is saved in the file itself, not in a viewer preference, so Acrobat, a browser, a phone and a printer all show the pages the new way up.
