Compress PDF files

Get a scan or an image-heavy report under an attachment limit. Your document is never sent anywhere, which matters when it contains something private.

How to use it

  1. Drop your PDF onto the box below.
  2. Choose a page resolution. Ebook suits most documents.
  3. Press Process files and download the smaller PDF.

How the compression works

Each page is redrawn as an image at the resolution you choose and re-encoded as JPEG, then the pages are assembled into a fresh PDF at the original page size. For scanned documents, which are already just pictures of paper, this typically removes more than half the file size and often much more.

The trade you are making

Because pages become images, text in the output can no longer be selected, searched or copied. That is the right trade for a scan, which had no real text layer anyway. It is the wrong trade for a contract or a thesis you still need to search, so keep the original file in those cases.

Choosing a resolution

Screen is the smallest and suits documents that will only ever be read on a phone or laptop. Ebook is the balanced default. Print keeps enough detail to put the document on paper without obvious softness, at a larger file size.

Questions

Is there a file size limit?

No server limit exists because there is no server. Very large documents are bounded only by your own device memory.

Will the page count or page size change?

No. Every page is preserved and each keeps its original dimensions.

Are password-protected PDFs supported?

Encrypted files cannot be opened without their password and will report an error. Remove the protection first, then compress.
